The World Health Organisation recognises Mental Health Day on October 10th with the overall goal of raising awareness of mental health problems around the world and mobilising efforts to improve mental health.

For all those focused on mental health issues, The Day offers an opportunity to speak about their efforts and what more needs to be done to make mental health services a priority for people around the world.

History

The history of the day began in 1992 when the first-ever World Mental Health Day was celebrated on October 10 by the World Federation for Mental Health initiative.

The day had no clear theme for two years, other than encouraging education and understanding of mental health. But the day was celebrated in 1994 with the slogan ‘Improving the Quality of Worldwide Mental Health Services.’

‘Mental Health for All: Greater Investment-Greater Access’ is the theme for World Mental Health Day 2020, as per World Federation for Mental Health.

Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, WHO Director-General, claimed that the world embraces the definition of universal health coverage and that mental health must be an integral part of the UHC. “Access to mental health services should not be denied to someone because she or he is disadvantaged or lives in a remote location,” he said.

The theme highlights the idea that mental health is a human right and that it is time to make mental health accessible to all.

Taking care of our mental health

If we have a mental health problem or not, we all need to take care of our mental health and welfare.

Mental well-being explains how you feel and how well you will deal with everyday life. It can vary from time to time, from day to day, from month to month or from year to year.
