Welsh Proverbs, Quotes, and Sayings
Welsh Proverbs
Welsh Proverbs are a traditional and straightforward saying that expresses a truth based on common sense or experience. Some proverbs exist in more than one language because people share with cultures similar to theirs.
The popularity of proverbs is due to the universality of their meaning and because most people can relate to them in some way and on some level.
Flag of Wales
The flag of Wales consists of a heraldry styled red dragon on a green and white field. As with many heraldic symbols, the exact representation of the dragon is not standardized, and many renderings exist.
The flag incorporates the red dragon of Cadwaladr, King of Gwynedd, along with the Tudor colors of green and white. It was officially recognized as the Welsh national flag in 1959.
Welsh Language
Welsh is a Brittonic language of the Celtic language family. It is spoken natively in Wales, by some in England, and in Y Wladfa, the Welsh colony in Chubut Province, Argentina.
Wales is a country that is part of the United Kingdom and about 20% of residents in Wales speak Welsh.
Welsh national identity emerged among the Britons after the Roman withdrawal from Britain in the 5th century, and Wales is regarded as one of the modern Celtic nations.
Llywelyn ap Gruffudd’s death in 1282 marked the completion of England’s conquest of Wales, though Owain Glyndŵr briefly restored independence to Wales in the early 15th century.
The whole of Wales was annexed by England and incorporated within the English legal system in 1535 and 1542, however, a distinctive Welsh politics developed in the 19th century.
Today, the Welsh Parliament (Senedd Cymru), formerly known as the National Assembly for Wales is responsible for a range of devolved policy matters.
