United States Holocaust Memorial Museum

The United States Holocaust Memorial Museum is adjacent to the National Mall in Washington, D.C., and focuses on the documentation, study, and interpretation of Holocaust history. It is dedicated to helping the world confront hatred, prevent genocide, promote human dignity, and strengthen democracy.

The museum’s collections contain more than 12,750 artifacts, 49 million pages of archival documents, 85,000 historical photographs, a list of over 200,000 registered survivors and their families, 1,000 hours of archival footage, 93,000 library items, and 9,000 oral history testimonies.

Researchers at the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum have documented 42,500 ghettos and concentration camps erected by the Nazis throughout German-controlled areas of Europe from 1933 to 1945.

The United States Holocaust Memorial Museum contains two long term exhibitions and numerous rotating exhibitions that deal with various topics related to the Holocaust and human rights. The Hall of Remembrance is the museum’s official memorial to the victims and survivors of the Holocaust. Visitors can memorialise the event by lighting candles, visiting an eternal flame, and reflecting in silence in the hexagonal hall.

“Despite everything, I believe that people are good at heart.”
– Anne Frank

~~~
“It all happened so fast. The ghetto. The deportation. The sealed cattle car. The fiery altar upon which the history of our people and the future of humanity were meant to be sacrificed.”
– Elie Wiesel
~~~

“For evil to flourish, it only requires good men to do nothing.”
– Simon Wiesenthal

~~~
“We must be listened to: above and beyond our personal experience, we have collectively witnessed a fundamental unexpected event, fundamental precisely because unexpected, not foreseen by anyone. It happened, therefore it can happen again: this is the core of what we have to say. It can happen, and it can happen everywhere.”
– Primo Levi
~~~

“I don’t want to have lived in vain like most people. I want to be useful or bring enjoyment to all people, even those I’ve never met. I want to go on living even after my death!”
– Anne Frank

~~~
“Thou shalt not be a victim; thou shalt not be a perpetrator, but, above all, thou shalt not be a bystander.”
– Yehuda Bauer
~~~

“Monsters exist, but they are too few in number to be truly dangerous. More dangerous are the common men, the functionaries ready to believe and to act without asking questions.”
– Primo Levi

~~~
“I had no real communication with anyone at the time, so I was totally dependent on God. And he never failed me.”
– Diet Eman
~~~

“Escape was not our goal since it was so unrealistic. What we wanted was to survive, to live long enough to tell the world what had happened in Buchenwald.”
– Jack Werber

~~~
“Surely there is no more wretched sight that the human body unloved and uncared for.”
– Corrie ten Boom
~~~

“For me, the Holocaust was not only a Jewish tragedy but also a human tragedy.”
– Simon Wiesenthal

~~~
“Six million of our people live on in our hearts. We are their eyes that remember. We are their voice that cries out. The dreadful scenes flow from their dead eyes to our open ones. And those scenes will be remembered exactly as they happened.”
– Shimon Peres
~~~

“Some people like the Jews and some do not. But no thoughtful man can deny the fact that they are, beyond any question, the most formidable and most remarkable race which has appeared in the world.
– Winston S. Churchill”

~~~
“After the war, when I saw that the Jews were talking only about the tragedy of six million Jews, I sent letters to Jewish organisations asking them to talk also about the millions of others who were persecuted with us together many of them only because they helped Jews.”
– Simon Wiesenthal
~~~

“Jews survived all the defeats, expulsions, persecutions and pogroms, the centuries in which they were regarded as a pariah people, even the Holocaust itself because they never gave up the faith that one day they would be free to live as Jews without fear.”
– Jonathan Sacks

~~~
“If we bear all this suffering
and if there are still Jews left,
when it is over,
then Jews, instead of being doomed,
will be held up as an example.”
– Anne Frank
