Shanghai Museums

Shanghai is the most populous city in the world, situated on the Yangtze River Delta and bounded to the east by the East China Sea. Shanghai grew in importance in the 19th century due to trade and its favorable port location. The 1842 Treaty of Nanking and the 1844 Treaty of Whampoa allowed the city to flourish as a center of commerce between China and other parts of the world.

In the 1990s, the economic reforms introduced by Deng Xiaoping resulted in an intense re-development of the city, which has since re-emerged as a hub for international trade and finance. It is the home of the Shanghai Stock Exchange, one of the world’s largest by market capitalization.

Shanghai is famous for its museums and historic buildings. Highlights of Shanghai include The Bund, as well as the City God Temple and the Yu Garden. Shanghai has many world-class museums of interest, and below is a list of some of the significant museums in Shanghai.
