The San Diego Model Railroad Museum is a large set of model railroad exhibits. At 27,000 sq. ft., it is the largest model railroading indoor exhibit in North America.
Model railroading consists of rail transport systems that are modeled at a reduced scale. The scale models include locomotives, rolling stock, streetcars, tracks, signaling, and landscapes.
The landscape modeling includes countryside, roads, bridges, buildings, vehicles, urban landscape, model figures, lights, and features such as rivers, hills, tunnels, and canyons.
The Museum opened in 1982 with a mission to:
“preserve the heritage of railroading through a series of miniature representations of California railroads, research and preserve the history of model railroading.”
The museum also has a specialized not-circulating library related to both model railroading and real railroads. The library collection includes books, magazines, videotapes, blueprints, and other materials for research.
The San Diego Model Railroad Museum exhibits some of the largest HO (1:87 scale) and N (1∶160 scale) layouts of their types. (Depending upon the manufacturer (or country), the N scale ranges from 1∶148 to 1∶160.)
The model railroads were built and are maintained by local railroad clubs, which exhibit their respective displays.
Highlights of the San Diego Model Railroad Museum

- San Diego & Arizona Eastern RR (HO scale) – the layout is based on the prototype San Diego and Arizona Eastern Railway line through Carriso Gorge to the desert floor at El Centro
- Tehachapi Pass (HO scale) the two-level layout represents the joint Southern Pacific / Santa Fe railroad from Bakersfield to Mojave, California, of the 1950s
