Salt Lake City is the capital of Utah and the seat of Salt Lake County, the most populous county in Utah. Salt Lake City is also part of a larger metropolis known as the Salt Lake City–Ogden–Provo Area.
Before European settlers arrived, the Shoshone, Weber Ute, and Paiute had dwelt in the Salt Lake Valley for thousands of years.
The United States treated the land as a public domain. No aboriginal title by the Northwestern Shoshone was ever ceded or relinquished by treaty with the United States.
The first explorer of European descent to the Salt Lake area was documented in 1825, although others had been in Utah earlier. The U.S. Army surveyed the Great Salt Lake and the Salt Lake Valley in 1843.
The city was founded in 1847 by Brigham Young and his followers, who established Salt Lake City as their world headquarters of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
Due to its proximity to the Great Salt Lake, the city was initially named Great Salt Lake City, but in 1868, “Great” was dropped from its name. The Mormon pioneers used the lake to built an extensive irrigation network in an arid valley to foster their growth and prosperity.
Immigration, mining booms, and the construction of the first transcontinental railroad brought economic growth. The city also became a major trade route traversed by the Lincoln Highway, the first transcontinental highway in 1913.
Today, Salt Lake City is an industrial banking center that also hosts several institutions of research and higher education. The city has also successfully developed a recreation tourist industry based on skiing and outdoor recreation.
