HISTORY OF ROWAN ATKINSON

MR BEAN 4

Comic actor and writer Rowan Sebastian Atkinson were born on January 6, 1955, in Newcastle upon Tyne, England. Atkinson studied at Newcastle University and Oxford University and earned a master’s degree in electrical engineering. He got his start performing sketches while studying at Oxford, first appearing in Oxford revues at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe. Soon, he was entertaining at theatre clubs and on comedy shows for BBC Radio 3. In 1979, Atkinson wrote for and starred in the BBC’s Not the Nine O’clock News. In 1981, Atkinson became the youngest performer to star in a one-man show in the West End.

Atkinson later appeared in theatrical productions like The Nerd (1984), The New Revue (1986) and The Sneeze (1988). He then landed parts on such television shows as Not the Nine O’Clock News (1979-1982), Blackadder (1983-1989) and The Thin Blue Line (1995-1996). The success of Blackadder spurred the creation of the TV specials Blackadder’s Christmas Carol and Blackadder: The Cavalier Years—both of which aired in 1988.

In 1990, Rowan debuted the character of Mr. Bean for a half-hour special. The character ended up being more popular than Rowan ever would have expected, and he was asked to bring Mr. Bean back several times in recurring TV specials and appearances over the early 1990s. In 1997, Mel Smith directed Bean, the first-ever Mr. Bean movie.

While the beginning of Mr. Bean started by looking in the mirror, Atkinson decided to put faith in what he was doing with his face following that first successful performance at Oxford. “In the sketch the following Sunday, I just went through a whole lot of facial expressions,” Atkinson said in a BBC World Service radio interview. “I’m not sure whether there was a particular narrative, a logic to it, but I did my best and it certainly solicited laughter. But since then, I’ve hardly ever looked at my face … I hope it’s doing what I think it’s doing.”

FAMILY

In 1990, Atkinson married wife Sunetra, a makeup artist. They had two children before divorcing in late 2015. In 2017, he became a father for the third time, this time with actress girlfriend Louise Ford.

In an interview with The Telegraph in November of 2012, Atkinson admitted that Mr. Bean’s time was coming to an end. “The stuff that has been most commercially successful for me—basically quite physical, quite childish—I increasingly feel I’m going to do a lot less of,” Atkinson said. “Apart from the fact that your physical ability starts to decline, I also think someone in their fifties being childlike becomes a little sad. You’ve got to be careful.”

A lot of people were very surprised about the revelation, mostly due to Rowan’s age. Although Rowan is 62, he is quite young at heart, and it is far from rare for older men in Hollywood to become fathers at a more advanced age. Rowan is actually pretty young when you compare him to Rolling Stones frontman Mick Jagger, who became a father for the eighth time at 73 years old!

MR BEAN 11

Rowan is not one to back down from a challenge and also is certainly not one to back down from adversity. Although he may be having some difficulties due to his divorce from Sunetra, he seems 100% to making his relationship with Louise Ford work as they welcome a baby into their lives. Regarding his career and personal life, Rowan is focused on the future.
