Portland is the largest city in Oregon and a major port at the Willamette and Columbia rivers’ confluence in Northwestern Oregon. It was named after Portland, Maine, on the east coast of the United States.
During the prehistoric period, the land that would become Portland was flooded after the collapse of glacial dams. These massive floods occurred during the last ice age and filled the Willamette Valley with vast water volumes.
Before American colonizers began arriving in the 1800s, the land was inhabited for many centuries by two bands of indigenous Chinook people, the Multnomah and the Clackamas.
The Portland Basin had become one of the most densely populated regions on the Pacific Coast by the indigenous peoples.
The European settlement in Oregon began to grow in the 1830s as one of the Oregon Trail endpoints. Its rivers provided convenient transportation of goods, and the timber industry was a major force in the city’s early economy.
The city’s economy experienced an industrial boom during World War II, and by the 1960s, Portland became noted for its progressive political values and as a hub of the counterculture.
The city government has been notable for its land-use planning and investment in public transportation, making Portland one of the world’s greenest cities.
