Archaeological Site of Pella

Pella was an ancient city in Central Macedonia, Greece, which was the historical capital of the ancient Greek kingdom of Macedon and the birthplace of Alexander the Great. Macedonia was an ancient kingdom with a long history but was on the periphery of Classical Greece and was outside of the area dominated by the historically great city-states of Athens, Sparta, and Thebes. However, during the reign of King Philip II (359–336 BC), Macedonia was strong enough to conquer mainland Greece and Thrace with a superior and more experienced army. Philip II’s son Alexander the Great, became the young leader of a federation of Greek states, which subsequently conquered a territory that stretched as far as the Indus River.

For a brief period, Alexander the Great empire was the most powerful in the world, leading to a new period of Ancient Greek civilization. Greek arts and literature flourished in the newly conquered lands, and advances in philosophy and science spread throughout much of the ancient world. After the premature death of Alexander in 323 BC, the empire was partitioned by Alexander’s Generals, and Macedonia became a Greek cultural and political center in the region. Macedonia’s decline began with the rise of Rome as the leading Mediterranean power.
