North Dakota is a state in the United States’ midwestern that was admitted to the Union in 1889, along with its neighboring state, South Dakota. Its capital is Bismarck, and its largest city is Fargo.
Native American peoples lived in North Dakota for thousands of years before the coming of Europeans. The first European to reach the area were French-Canadian traders in 1738.
From 1762 to 1802, the region formed part of Spanish Louisiana. European Americans settled in Dakota Territory only sparsely until the late 19th century, when railroads opened up the region.
Western North Dakota saw a boom in oil exploration in the late 1970s and early 1980s, as rising petroleum prices made development profitable. In the 21st century, North Dakota’s natural resources have played a major role in its economic growth.
North Dakota’s major art museums include the Empire Arts Center, North Dakota Museum of Art, and the Plains Art Museum.
