The New Orleans Museum of Art was established in 1911 as the Delgado Museum of Art, initially funded through a charitable grant by local philanthropist and art collector Isaac Delgado.
Since then, the museum has undergone significant expansion and renovation. Together with crucial new art acquisitions, the New Orleans Museum of Art is one of the nation’s important fine art museums.
The museum includes a Sculpture Garden, which features over 90 modern and contemporary sculptures set among oaks, pines, magnolias, camellias, lagoons, and a walking trail.
The museum’s collection features over 40,000 objects spanning 5,000 years of art. The furniture collection includes important examples of 18th and 19th-century American furniture and a group of 18th-century French pieces.
The museum features a comprehensive survey of French art, including works by the French Impressionist Edgar Degas from his time living with his mother’s family in New Orleans between 1871 and 1872.
The museum also includes an auditorium for film screenings, artist talks, panels, and presentations.
