Museums in Darwin, Australia

Darwin is the capital and the largest city of the Northern Territory of Australia. It is also the smallest and most northerly of the Australian capital cities and acts as the regional centre. The greater Darwin area is the ancestral home of the Larrakia Aboriginal people.

In 1839, HMS Beagle sailed into the harbour during its surveying of the area and the harbour was named “Port Darwin” in honour of a former shipmate Charles Darwin, who had sailed on the ship’s previous voyage which had ended in 1836. The later settlement there became the town of Palmerston in 1869 and was renamed Darwin in 1911.

Some of the key museums in Darwin include:

  • Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory
