The Museum of the History of the Olympic Games of Antiquity has over 400 exhibits, dated from the prehistoric period to the 5th century A.D. The museum traces the historical development of the Olympic Games and the other Panhellenic festivals.
The other critical festivals in addition to the Olympic games were the Pythian at Delphi, the Nemean at the sanctuary of Zeus at Nemea, and the Isthmian Games at the temple of Poseidon near Corinth.
The museum is an archaeological museum with a collection of artifacts from the sanctuary of Olympian Zeus in Olympia where the ancient Olympic Games were born and hosted.
The museum’s collection represents the history of the Olympic Games in terracottas, bronzes, and sculptures that relate to the sporting events and athletic activity of the Olympics.
Exhibited are objects that athletes used in their training and ancient artworks the honored the victors and Greek gods.
