Malaysian language

The Malaysian language is the name regularly applied to the Malay language used in Malaysia. The official language of Malaysia is Malay, but the government sometimes refers to it as Malaysian.

Standard Malaysian is spoken by much of the Malaysian population, although most learn a vernacular form of Malay or another native language.

The Malaysian language script is prescribed by law as the Latin alphabet, known in Malay as Rumi, provided that the Arabic alphabet called Jawi (or Malay script) is not proscribed for that purpose.

Rumi is the official script, while efforts are being undertaken to preserve Jawi script and revive its use in Malaysia.

The Malaysian language has most of its borrowings absorbed from Sanskrit, Tamil, Hindi, Persian, Portuguese, Dutch, Sinitic languages, Arabic, and English.

Indonesian has also influenced modern Malaysian Malay through Indonesian dramas, soap operas, and music.
