Maine is the most northeastern state in the United States. Located in New England, it is bordered by New Hampshire, the Atlantic Ocean, and Canada. Maine is known for its jagged, rocky coastline, heavily forested interior, and seafood cuisine, especially lobster and clams.
For thousands of years, after the glaciers retreated during the last Ice Age, indigenous peoples were the only inhabitants of the territory that is now Maine.
The first European settlement in the area was by the French in 1604 on Saint Croix Island. The first English settlement was the short-lived colony, established by the Plymouth Company in 1607.
Several English settlements were established along the coast of Maine in the 1620s, although the climate, deprivations, and conflict with the local peoples caused many to fail. Only a half dozen European settlements had survived, as Maine entered the 18th century,
During the War of 1812, the largely undefended eastern region of Maine was occupied by British forces in an attempt to annex it to Canada.
A peace treaty returned the territory to the United States, and Maine became part of Massachusetts until 1820. Under the Missouri Compromise, Maine was admitted to the Union as the 23rd state.
Maine has many historical societies and museums that are engaged in preserving historic sites and collecting, preserving, and presenting Maine’s history and culture.
