Little Rock is Arkansas’s capital city, located on the Arkansas River banks close to its geographic center. The city derived its name from a rock formation along the river and was named the “Little Rock” by a French explorer in the 1720s.
The capital of the Arkansas Territory was moved to Little Rock in 1821 and the city was incorporated in 1831. Today, the city is a cultural, economic, government, and transportation center within Arkansas and the South.
Several museum institutions are based in Little Rock, such as the Arkansas Arts Center. The city’s history is covered through history museums, historic districts, historic sites, and the Clinton Presidential Center.
The William J. Clinton Presidential Center includes the Clinton presidential library, which contains 2 million photographs, 80 million pages of documents, 21 million e-mail messages, and nearly 80,000 artifacts from the Clinton presidency.
The Presidential museum showcases artifacts from Clinton’s term and has a full-scale replica of the Clinton-era Oval Office.
