Las Vegas is the largest city in Nevada and is renowned as a major resort city, known primarily for its gambling, shopping, dining, and entertainment. Las Vegas also serves as the leading financial, commercial, and cultural center for Nevada.
Nomadic Paleo-Indians first arrived in the Las Vegas area about 10,000 years ago, and the Anasazi and Paiute tribes have been in the area for at least 2,000 years ago.
In 1829 the area was explored by a Spanish explorer and merchant, and the area was named Las Vegas, which is Spanish for “the meadows.” The desert spring waters became a noted feature that attracted westward travelers.
Las Vegas was founded as a city in 1905 when 110 acres (45 ha) of land adjacent to the Union Pacific Railroad tracks were auctioned.
The city attracted more residents when in 1931 Nevada legalized casino gambling and reduced residency requirements for divorce to six weeks. Also, the construction of Hoover Dam led to an influx of construction workers.
Further development was encouraged when in 1941, the Las Vegas Army Airfield was established. Today it is home for the United States Air Force Thunderbirds aerobatic team.
Following World War II, lavishly decorated hotels, gambling casinos, and big-name entertainment became synonymous with Las Vegas.
Between 1990 and 2000, the population nearly doubled, and its rapid growth has continued into the 21st century.
The city is famous for its mega casino-hotels and is one of the top destinations for business conventions. Las Vegas is also a popular setting for literature, films, television programs, and music videos.
