Juliet’s house (Casa di Giulietta) is one of the main attractions of Verona with the most famous balcony in the world. Every day crowds of people make their way through the narrow archway into the courtyard to admire and photograph the famous balcony. Couples of all ages swear eternal fidelity here in memory of Shakespeare’s play “Romeo and Juliet”.
The house in Verona that has been billed as Juliet’s, is on the whole fluff covered with touristic fairy dust. Shakespeare’s Juliet wasn’t based on a real person, and the house doesn’t have any relation to the story. Nevertheless, you’ll always find big crowds of people from all over the world who come here to live the fantasy.
Juliet’s Balcony
The balcony belongs to the aptly named La Casa di Giulietta, or House of Juliet, the former home of the Cappello family, and the inspiration for the Capulets. Love-struck couples linger in the garden, pose for pictures on the balcony, or attach letters filled with sweet nothings to the walls. For good luck, many like to cop a feel of the bronze statue of Juliet, specifically her right breast, which has resulted in it developing a beautiful patina. Many people also leave their mark through graffiti and sticking chewing gum to the walls, some of the blobs being shaped into crude hearts.
Fun Facts About South CarolinaJuliet’s Statue
Entered through a little arched passageway set inside Casa di Giulietta’s main courtyard, the small statue of a girl is a favorite for visitors. Found just a few feet from the balcony from which she and Romeo first confessed their love, this statue of Juliet effectively humanizes this tragedy we all know so well. Before you leave, take a moment to rub the right breast of Juliet, a tradition no one seems to be able to explain.
Shakespeare in Verona
Beyond the myth of Romeo and Juliet, there is a real city that every summer decides to celebrate Shakespeare’s masterpieces.
From June to September, Verona Summer Festival is back on stage in the Roman Theatre, and in the Old Market Court, in this suggestive atmosphere, Shakespeare dramas are still alive.
The city is the natural location for the Shakespeare Festival, different parts of Verona for a few moments become the stage for various plays and events related to the most famous dramatist of all the time.
A tradition that was perpetuated throughout the years, consolidated by the fact that Verona is a city that more than any other is the most identified with Shakespeare.
In fact, it appears in three plays of the English playwright: in the well known Romeo and Juliet but also in The Taming of the Shrew and in The Two Gentlemen of Verona.
Verona Love Wall
In the courtyard of Juliet’s House, there’s a whole Love Wall covered with graffiti and notes from visitors. The local authorities had originally tried to impose fines on those defacing the wall but realized they were fighting a losing battle so they cleverly created special removable panels where you are allowed to write or stick a message.
At peak visiting times, it can get extremely crowded in the courtyard. If you’re lucky to be staying at Palazzo Victoria, this beautiful townhouse has its own replica Love Wall, so getting a photo was a lot easier.
