Jewish Museum London

The Jewish Museum London is a museum of British Jewish life, history and identity. The museum has a dedicated to exploring Jewish history, culture, and heritage. The museum was founded in 1932 and houses a collection of Jewish ceremonial art, and the museum’s Holocaust Gallery includes items and filmed survivor testimony. The museum also has exhibitions recounting the history of Jewish life in England, supported by a diverse collection of objects. There are also collections of paintings, prints and drawings, and an archive of photographs.

History of the Jews in England

The first written record of Jewish settlement in England dated from 1070 and continued until the Edict of Expulsion in 1290. After the expulsion, there was no Jewish community, apart from people who practised Judaism secretly. Under the rule of Oliver Cromwell, a small colony of Sephardic Jews living in London was identified in 1656 and allowed to stay.

Britain in the 19th century acquired a reputation for religious tolerance and attracted significant immigration from Eastern Europe. Benjamin Disraeli, born Jewish but converted to Anglicanism, had been elected twice as the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom in 1868 and 1874. In the 1930s and 1940s, an increase of European Jews fled to England to escape the Nazis.

Jews in Britain now number about 275,000, which is the second largest Jewish population in Europe, behind France and the fifth largest Jewish community worldwide. The majority of the Jews in England live in and around London.
