Heraklion, Crete
Heraklion, Crete is the largest city and the capital of the island of Crete. It is also the fourth largest city in Greece. Heraklion is close to the ruins of the palace of Knossos, which in Minoan times was is the largest Bronze Age city in Crete and Europe’s oldest ancient city. The present city of Heraklion was founded in 824 and has been invaded by many powers in the thousand years, following its founding. Invaders and occupiers have included Saracens, Byzantine forces, Venetians, Crusaders, Ottomans, British troops and Nazi German forces.
Heraklion is an important shipping port, and ferries connect Heraklion to many destinations including Santorini, Ios Island, Paros, Mykonos, Rhodes, Naxos and Piraeus, the port of Athens in mainland Greece.
