Museums in Manchester

Manchester lies within the United Kingdom’s second-largest urban area. The recorded history of Manchester began with the establishment of the Roman Fort of Mancunium about AD 79.

Throughout the Middle Ages, Manchester remained a manorial township but began to rapidly expand around the turn of the 19th century with the boom in textile manufacture during the Industrial Revolution.

Manchester soon becomes the world’s first industrialized city, achieving city status in 1853. The Manchester Ship Canal opened in 1894, creating the Port of Manchester and linking the city to the sea, to the west.

Its railway station was the world’s first inter-city passenger railway station, and in Manchester, scientists first split the atom and developed the stored-program computer.

Greater Manchester Museums

Greater Manchester is a metropolitan county in North West England, the third-largest in England after Greater London and the West Midlands.

It comprises ten metropolitan boroughs: Bolton, Bury, Oldham, Rochdale, Stockport, Tameside, Trafford, Wigan, and the cities of Manchester and Salford.

Greater Manchester consists of a mix of high-density urban areas, suburbs, semi-rural, and rural locations, but land use is mostly urban.

Greater Manchester is the product of concentric urbanization and industrialization which occurred mostly during the 19th century when the region flourished as the global center of the cotton industry.

Since deindustrialization in the mid-20th century, Greater Manchester has emerged as an exporter of media and digital content, guitar and dance music, and association football.

Today, Manchester is the third-most visited city in the UK, after London and Edinburgh. It is notable for its architecture, culture, and museums.
