  1. The surprising formula for primes proposed by J. Minac and C. Willans in 1995 had 47 symbols. This formula, based on the Wilson theorem, gives all the primes successively and without repetition, but unfortunately is not very convenient.
  2. There is an abnormally high use of the prime number 47 in episodes of Star Trek. For example, in the Star Trek: Voyager episode “Infinite Regress,” Naomi Wildman reveals that there are 47 sub-orders of the Prime Directive.
  3. Each cell in the human body has 46 chromosomes. Down’s Syndrome is caused when the fertilized egg develops a 47th chromosome during mitosis. Individuals with Down’s Syndrome have 47 chromosomes in each cell.
  4. Another fun fact about the number 47. It is approximately 47 degrees from the Tropic of Cancer (the greatest distance north that the sun can appear directly overhead) to the Tropic of Capricorn (the greatest distance south that the sun can appear directly overhead).
  5. There is a club at Pomona, California called The 47 Society, which claims that there exists mathematical proof that all numbers are equal to 47. They also say that the number 47 occurs with greater frequency in nature than other numbers – 74 makes frequent reappearances as well, as does 23 (half of 47 rounded down).
