France’s capital is Paris, and its other large cities are Marseille, Lyon, Lille, Nice, Toulouse, and Bordeaux. During the Iron Age, France was inhabited by the Gauls, a Celtic people, and Ancient Rome annexed the area in 51 BCE.
France emerged as a significant European power in the Late Middle Ages, and during the Renaissance, French culture flourished. A global colonial empire was established, which by the 20th century would be the second-largest in the world.
France has long been a global center of art, science, and philosophy, and French culture has had a significant influence on many other cultures. There are many famous museums in France.
