The Brooklyn Historical Society is a museum, library, and educational center preserving and supporting the study of Brooklyn’s history. The Society, which was founded in 1863, houses materials relating to the history of Brooklyn and its people.
The Society’s Romanesque Revival building, located in Brooklyn Heights, was designed and built in 1878-81, it is part of New York City’s Brooklyn Heights Historic District.
The Society’s education programs include primary source documents, including works of art, maps, photographs, and other artifacts.
The Library has a collection that includes family histories in the genealogy collection, a collection of Brooklyn and Long Island newspapers from the 19th and early 20th centuries, and many other institutional papers.
