Birmingham, Alabama was founded in 1871 and today serves as an important regional hub and is associated with the Deep South, Piedmont, and Appalachian regions of the nation.
Birmingham, in the post–Civil War era, developed into a significant industrial center based on mining and the steel industry.
The city initially developed as a place where low paid, non-unionized immigrants, mainly Irish and Italian, along with African-Americans from rural Alabama, worked in the city’s steel industry, giving it a competitive advantage over unionized industrial cities.
The city’s economy has more recently diversified with banking, telecommunications, transportation, medical care, education, and insurance, becoming its major economic activities.
Birmingham is the cultural center of Alabama, with numerous art galleries, including the Birmingham Museum of Art.
The area’s history museums include the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute, the Southern Museum of Flight, Bessemer Hall of History, Sloss Furnaces National Historic Landmark, Alabama Museum of Health Sciences, and Arlington Home.
The McWane Science Center is a regional science museum, and other unique museums include the Barber Vintage Motorsports Museum, the Iron & Steel Museum of Alabama, and the Alabama Sports Hall of Fame.
