Australia is a country and continent surrounded by the Pacific and the Indian oceans. Its principal cities are spread around the coast and include Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth, Adelaide, Hobart, and Darwin.
Australia’s political capital is Canberra, which is inland and 250kms southwest of Sydney. Australia is the world’s largest island but also the smallest continent. The country is divided into six states and two territories.
Australia has some great museums which provide a unique sample of Western, Asian, and Pacific masterpieces as well as a significant focus on the Australian Aboriginal culture.

The history of Indigenous Australians began over 65,000 years ago when Aboriginal Australians first populated Australia.
At the time of first European contact, it is estimated that as many as 750,000 people lived in Australia, with upper estimates being as high as 1.25 million.
A cumulative population of 1.6 billion people has been estimated to have lived in Australia for over 70,000 years. With this long and diverse history, Australia’s First Peoples developed a strong spiritual connection to the land, water, and animals that continues today.
“In the spirit of reconciliation, the “Joy of Museums” acknowledges the Traditional Custodians of country throughout Australia and their connections to land, sea, and community.
We pay our respect to their elders past and present and extend that respect to all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples today.”
