Mont Sainte-Victoire by Paul Cézanne depicts Mont Sainte-Victoire seen from Montbriant in Aix-en-Provence.

Cézanne shows the railway bridge on the Aix-Marseille line at the Arc River Valley in the center on the right side of this picture.

Cézanne spent a lot of time in Aix-en-Provence in southern France at the time and developed a special relationship with the landscape.

In this painting, the view has been cropped so that the pines are only visible on the left and top. The branches follow the contours of the Montagne Sainte-Victoire.

By focusing on a small part of the plain before him, Cézanne has made the distant mountain seem closer and more significant than in other versions of this series.

Paul Cézanne created this version of “Mont Sainte-Victoire” from his hillside studio at Les Lauves. From his viewpoint, Cézanne enjoyed a magnificent view of the soaring mountain from across the valley.

This depiction includes the farmland, distinctive olive and almond trees below Les Lauves.

Cézanne first painted Mont Sainte-Victoire in 1870, beginning his decades-long fascination with the subject.  Paul Cézanne created more than thirty paintings and watercolors of Mont Sainte-Victoire.

The peak played an important role in the ancient history of his Aix-en-Provence. Its name refers to a Roman victory in 102 BC over the Teutonic armies in the area.

The Teutons were an ancient tribe mentioned by Roman authors. They are generally classified as a Germanic tribe. The Teutons are best known for their participation in the Cimbrian War with the Roman Republic in the late 2nd century BC.

“Mont Sainte-Victoire and the Viaduct of the Arc River Valley” by Paul Cézanne

“Mont Sainte-Victoire and the Viaduct of the Arc River Valley” by Paul Cézanne depicts Montagne Sainte-Victoire and the valley of the Arc River.

Montagne Sainte-Victoire dominates the landscape of Cézanne’s hometown of Aix-en-Provence, which can be seen in the background.

The city is visible in the distance, far back from the valley of the Arc River. This painting also depicts the railway bridge on the Aix-Marseille line at the Arc River Valley and the train, which runs on it.

In this painting, Cézanne explores the creation of depth using layers to build up a set of horizontal planes that draw the eye into the view.

Although in terms of size, this is one of Cézanne’s smallest works in his artistic career, it has been described as one of Cézanne’s most significant artworks.

Paul Cezanne - Montagne Sainte-Victoire

“Montagne Sainte-Victoire” by Paul Cézanne

“Montagne Sainte-Victoire” by Paul Cézanne was one of Cézanne’s favorite subjects. He never tired of exploring its structure and changing appearance.

This picture unfinished state provides some insight into Cézanne’s working method and his ‘constructive’ brushwork.

Foreground foliage, undulating fields, the distant mountain, and sky have emerged gradually from a harmonious patchwork of colors applied across the canvas.

The Montagne Sainte-Victoire, with its cragged broken top, stands east of Cézanne’s home town, Aix-en-Provence.  For Paul Cézanne, it came to symbolize his home and the landscapes of his home Provence.

Cézanne’s landscape is based on his vantage point, eight miles west of Aix, over the valley of the Arc.

“Mont Sainte-Victoire and Château Noir” by Paul Cézanne

“Mont Sainte-Victoire and Château Noir” by Paul Cézanne depicts the Château Noir  or”black castle,” an estate near the village of Le Tholonet on the way to Mont Sainte-Victoire. The Château Noir was in fact a reddish roughcast neo-Gothic building.

Cézanne rented a small cottage near Bibémus quarry to the east of Aix to make it easier for him to paint in the open air.

At this location, Cézanne created many of his later paintings. He was surrounded by pine forests, with the ochre-colored stone of Bibémus quarry nearby and a view of the towering Mont Sainte-Victoire.

The Mont Sainte-Victoire fascinated Cézanne all his life, and it provided an inexhaustible source of new compositions.

The Mont Sainte-Victoire series of paintings belong to Post-Impressionism. Cézanne was skilled at depicting nature and using different colors to represent the depth of objects.

Montagne Sainte-Victoire is a limestone mountain ridge in the south of France which extends over 18 km (11 mi) between Bouches-du-Rhône and Var. Its highest point is at 1,011 metres (3,317 ft).

The mountain is celebrated for its many appearances in a series of paintings by Paul Cézanne (1839–1906), who could see it from near his house in nearby Aix-en-Provence.

The mountain was qriginally called Montagne de la Victoire, the mountain became known by Christians in the Middle Ages as Sainte-Venture. In the 13th century, a chapel was constructed at the summit.

It was not until the 17th century that the mountain gained its current name.

The Saint-Victoire massif is a popular destination for hiking, climbing, paragliding, and, to a lesser extent, caving. Around 700,000 walkers use its paths every year.
