Plants are nature’s ornaments, decorating our forests, deserts, and jungles in all shapes and sizes and all the colors of the spectrum. Some plants combine colors and shapes that are breathtakingly beautiful. Others seem to have sprung from the minds of science fiction writers.

1. 85% of plant life is found in the ocean.
2. Bamboo is an extremely rapidly growing plant. In fact, some bamboo varieties can grow almost a metre (about 3.2 feet) in a single day.
3. Tomato juice is the official state beverage of Ohio, honoring the part A. W. Livingston of Reynoldsburg, Ohio, played in popularizing the tomato in the late 1800s.
4. Lots of plants are used as dyes. You can colour cloth with stewed onion skin, tea bags, or walnut juice. One of the oldest blue dyes comes from a plant called ‘woad’ that has been used since Neolithic times – more than 6,000 years ago.
5. 90 percent of the foods humans eat come from just 30 plants.
Out of tens of thousands of plants, we could eat, mankind chooses to consume only about 30 of them. It’s crazy to contemplate how limited our diets are compared to all of the different foods we could be eating. If you think the selection of which plants we eat has anything to do with their nutritional benefits, however, you’d be wrong.
6. Cricket bats are made of a tree called Willow and baseball bats are made out of the wood of the Hickory tree.

Chances are, a plant you find in one part of the world is not currently growing anywhere else. As plant habitat is ruined, there’s little point in hoping that the killed plants could be found and harvested somewhere else in the future.
