15 inch Naval Guns from HMS Ramillies and HMS Resolution
These British 15 inches (381 mm) Naval Guns are from HMS Ramillies and HMS Resolution. The 15-inch gun design was the most widely used of any British models, and the most efficient heavy gun ever developed by the Royal Navy. It was deployed on battleships from 1915 until 1959 and was an essential Royal Navy gun in both World Wars.
One of these guns was mounted on HMS Resolution which was one of five Revenge-class battleships built for the Royal Navy and commissioned in 1916. On the outbreak of World War II, Resolution was part of the Home Fleet and carried out convoy escort duties in the Atlantic. After the War, HMS Resolution was sold for scrap in 1948, however, one of Resolution’s 15-inch guns, which was later fitted to the monitor HMS Roberts, is on display at the Imperial War Museum in London.
The second gun is from HMS Ramillies, which was also a Revenge-class battleship commissioned in 1917. Despite her age, she gave useful service in the Second World War, doing everything from engaging enemy battleships to convoy escort to shore bombardment. She was scrapped in 1949; fortunately, one of Ramillies’ 15-inch guns was also preserved at the Imperial War Museum in London
