Planet Jupiter is the largest planet and the fifth planet in the solar system. Earth is two and a half times more massive than any of the other planets combined in the solar system. It is primarily made from gas, and is therefore known as a “gas giant.”

Here are 10 Amazing Facts About Giant Planet Jupiter.

1. Planet Jupiter is twice as huge as all the planets combined. If the huge planet were about 80 times more massive, it would actually have become a star rather than a planet. The enormous volume of Jupiter could contain more than 1,300 Earths. It suggests Earth would be the size of a grape if Jupiter were the size of a basketball.

2. Stargazers consider Planet Jupiter a bombed star; however, that is not so much a proper depiction. While the facts confirm that, similar to a star, Jupiter is wealthy in hydrogen and helium, Jupiter doesn’t have almost enough mass to trigger a combination response in its center. This is the means by which stars produce vitality, by melding hydrogen molecules under extraordinary warmth and strain to make helium, delivering light and warmth all the while. It is possible due to their immense the gravity. Jupiter will need more than 70 times its current mass to ignite a nuclear fusion cycle and become a star. If you could crash together dozens of Jupiters, you might get a chance to make a new star. But Planet Jupiter, meanwhile, will remain a large gas giant with no hopes of becoming a star.

3. The Babylonians of history were the first to report their Jupiter sightings. It was around the eighth century BC. Jupiter is named after the Roman god King. To the Greeks, it represented Zeus, the thunder god. Planet Jupiter was considered by the Mesopotamians as the god Marduk and patron of Babylon’s city. Germanic tribes saw this planet as being either Donar or Thor.

4. The gaseous shell, the atmosphere surrounding Planet Jupiter, is the Solar System’s highest planetary atmosphere. It makes up basically the whole world. It essentially has no true surface with its atmosphere touching 5,000 km/1,864 mill altitudes.

5. Ganymede is the largest of the Planet Jupiter Moons in the solar system. The planets are often referred to as the Jovian satellites, and Ganymede, Callisto, Jupiter, and Europa are the largest. Ganymede is larger than the Mercury planet with a diameter of some 5,268 km.

6. Since Galileo first laid telescope-enhanced eyes at Jupiter, scientists have continued to study the curious world from both the ground and the sky.In 1979, the gas giant zipped the NASA’s Voyager 1 and 2 spacecraft, taking tens of thousands of pictures as they went by. The data revealed that giant Jupiter sports small, dusty rings amongst the surprises of these missions.

7. The Clouds On Planet Jupiter Are Only 50 km Thick. That’s true, just about 50 km thick are all those beautiful whirling clouds and storms that you see on Jupiter. They are made of crystals of ammonia, broken up into two different cloud decks. The darker material is believed to be substances carried up from deeper within Jupiter, and as they interacted with sunlight, they change color. But below those clouds, it’s just hydrogen and helium, all the way down.

8. Planet Jupiter has a thin ring system. The rings consist mainly of dust particles which are expelled from some of Jupiter ‘s smaller worlds during collisions from incoming comets and asteroids. The ring system starts about 92,000 kilometers above Jupiter’s cloud tops and stretches to more than 225,000 kilometers from the planet. They have a thickness of between 2,000 and 12,500 km.

9. So far, eight spacecraft visited Planet Jupiter. Those are Pioneers 10 and 11, Voyager 1 and 2, Galileo, Cassini, Ulysses, and the Journey to New Horizons. Another spacecraft, Juno, is scheduled to arrive sometime around July 2016 at Jupiter. Future plans are also planned to focus on Jupiter’s Jovian moons – Europa, Ganymede, and Callisto – and their possible oceans on the subsoil.

10. In a way, Planet Jupiter is the vacuum cleaner for the Solar System due to its strong gravity that causes many of the comets and asteroids to reach it, rather than other planets.
