1 Day until the Roots Picnic ’14: The Roots

The Roots, The Roots, The Roots are on fire! Finally the day has come to witness one of the greatest bands alive perform today at the Festival Pier, Penn’s Landing. In 1987, The Roots originated in Philadelphia with Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson and Tariq “Black Thought” Trotter while they were both attending the Philadelphia High School for the Creative and Performing Arts (CAPA).

Their first breakthrough was back in 1999, when they released Things Fall Apart that reached no. 4 on the Billboard charts. You Got Me won a Grammy award for Best Rap Performance By A Duo Or Group and the album was nominated for Best Rap Album. Since then The Roots has been releasing nothing but hits and are now hitting the stage every week night on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon. The Roots Picnic would not be possible without them, I mean forreal. Catch them and all these great acts at the Roots Picnic!

The Roots Picnic is less than a month away. In preparation, I plan to do my homework and learn as much about every artist performing on that bill. For the next 1 days, everyday will be a mini celebration leading up until the grand finale on May 31st at Penn’s Landing, the 7th annual Roots Picnic. Click here for tickets and for more info.

2 Days until the Roots Picnic ’14: Snoog Dogg

Snoop Dogg has been in the game for over 20 years. He’s an O.G. in the rap game and probably the only rapper to continuously reinvent himself while staying true to good ol’ Snoop Dogg. We’ve seen Snoop Dogg at clubs, on Girls Gone Wild, at sold at concert, but we haven’t seen him perform on stage in Philly with the Roots band backing him up, tuning into 20 years of classic jams.

And I just found out that Snoop Dogg is also a fan of Game of Thrones! Watch Snoop Dogg recap the last episode with Seth Rogen on his YouTube series. We all know what Snoop is doing after the picnic on Sunday at 10pm EST.

3 Days until the Roots Picnic ’14: Janelle Monae

Janelle Monae is one of the most creative and down-to-earth artist. She’s so cool that in Boston, October 16th is “Janelle Monae Day” in recognition of her artistry and social leadership. This beautiful tuxedo-wearing performer has been nominated for 6 Grammys.

Her music career became more prevalent when she moved to Atlanta, GA in 2001. That’s where she meat Big Boi and founded the Wondaland Arts Society. Big Boi put in a good word to Diddy about Janelle Monae and in 2006, she was signed to Bad Boy. Her unique beauty and style led her a deal to be Covergirl’s spokeswoman in 2012. And last year, Monáe’s first single from The Electric Lady, Q.U.E.E.N., which features Erykah Badu received 31,000 digital sales with 4 million YouTube views within its first week of release. I personally can’t wait for her energy to transcend across the stage at the picnic.

5 Days until the Roots Picnic ’14: Action Bronson

Action Bronson is killing it right now. He’s a rapper from Flushing, Queens, NY, signed by Vice Records and Atlantic Records. Before he became a rapper, he was a chef in NYC. And then he decided to start releasing mix tapes, often time referencing food and chef skills. His word smith and style play was being compared to Ghostface Killah. After numerous collaboration with other notable producers, he’s quickly rising to the top.

With his sexy figure at 5’8 and 300lb, he’s also known to body slam and throw people off from the stage. You can find numerous videos of him doing so on YouTube. He also has an online series on Vice called: F*ck, That’s Delicious.

If anyone should be performing at the Roots Picnic, it should be Action Bronson.

6 Days until the Roots Picnic ’14: The War on Drugs

Straight out of Philly, The War on Drugs, formed back in 2005 with Adam Granduciel (vocals, guitar), David Hartley (bass, guitar), Robbie Bennett (keyboards, guitar) and Patrick Berkery (drums). I tried searching them and kept getting articles on crack cocaine. But what I found on The War on Drugs band was amaze-balls. Pitchfork rated their last album, Lost in the Dream, 8.8 as best new music.

Rolling Stones best describe The War on Drug’s music in their March issue, “While standout epic ‘Red Eyes’ demonstrates the group’s steadfast grip on Tom Petty’s restless rhythms, ‘Ocean Between the Waves’ surprisingly brings to mind U.K. roots-rock innovators Dire Straits, and a bit of Avalon-era Roxy Music can be heard in the New Romantic bass and piano of ‘Disappearing.'” Hopefully, I won’t be patted down for enjoying The War on Drugs at the picnic.

British band, Rudimental, consists of  Piers Agget, Amir Amor, Kesi Dryden and DJ Locksmith (Leon Rolle). Rudimental is not only making music all over the world, performing at sold out shows, but they’re taking home awards… maaadd awards. They achieved multiple platinum awards in several countries including in the UK and Australia. According to the wiki, “They were nominated for a Mercury Prize in 2013, and won several awards including the Brit Award for Best Single of the Year for Waiting All Night featuring the then unknown singer Ella Eyre, and the Mobo Award for Best Album.”

Rudimental’s most popular song, Feel the Love‘s music video was filmed last year in Philly.  The video features young horseback riders and neighborhood scenes from the informal Fletcher Street Urban Riding Club, a longtime homegrown community-based program for youth. Putting North Philly on the YouTube spot with over 35 million views. Ride along to the picnic to check out Rudimental.
