By Robby Stillwagon

After working on such projects as This Film Is Not Yet Rated and Twist of Faith, documentarian Kirby Dick has now pointed his camera at the steps of the Nation's Capital. While working on a separate project, Dick began to get a sense of the vast amount of stories not being told in the D.C. seats of power. One such story centered on the hypocritical stance of closeted gay politicians who have a long, storied history of voting against gay rights. In scrutinizing these duplicitous men, whose political lives exist almost solely to support the suppressive system, Dick has allowed viewers to see the issue from several viewpoints. One such perspective involves an in-depth examination of such well-known controversies as the one surrounding former senator Larry Craig's “bathroom incident," but there are many other stories touched on that haven't been made so public. And, to his credit, Dick balances out the “us vs. them” mentality by suggesting just how much these politicians are caught in this untenable system themselves. Using emotional first person accounts, he delves into the stories of these men and their double lives, including the wives and girlfriends of those still hiding deep in the far reaches of their closets. The film eventually comes to examine the debate over the morality of outing closeted public icons. After talking with several outted (mostly ex-) politicians, Dick evokes the philosophical stance that public figures need to be held accountable for their private hypocrisies. Although his film shines a welcome beam of light into some of the dark corners of D.C. at a time when gay rights and gay marriage still manage to be political fodder for both parties, it still seems to come too long after the fact. The truth is, the GOP, behind Karl Rove's expert LCD politik, already won one presidency with anti-gay marriage as one of the premiere tenets of its platform, so the system, far from showing its age and susceptibility, has instead proven its continued dominance.
