Philly Tech Week: KEYSPOT Solutions Session
Discussing the digital divide on the closing day of Philly Tech Week…
On the closing day of Philly Tech Week, some of Philadelphia’s best journalists, educators and technology experts gathered at Drexel University’s Bossone Research Enterprise Center for a live panel discussion. Hosted by Donna Frisby Greenwood (Knights Foundation Director), the topic at hand was closing the digital divide in lower income communities. Panelists included Sophie Bryan (Chief Of Staff to Councilman Bill Green), Kapil R. Dandekar (associate professor of comp. engineering at Drexel U.), Deaglan Daugherty (Digital Inclusion Mngr. for Philadelphia FIGHT Critical Path Project), Jeff Friedman (Mngr. of Civic Innovation for Mayor Nutter), Mark Headd (Writer/Speaker on Communication Tech), Anthony Martin (Founder of Urban Youth Racing School) and Youngjin Yoo (Professor of Management info Fox School of Business). The session also included a short video showcasing the effect KEYSPOT has had in the community, providing computers and internet access to those less fortunate. The featured panelists also discussed the results of an experiment they conducted, cutting themselves off from the internet for 48 hours. The purpose was to experience everyday life as those without easy access to online content. The inconvenience of not having the internet within hand’s reach 24/7, really drove home the point with panelists of how this technology is taken for granted.
