Fall Fashion Update – 5 Transitional Items For Your Wardrobe
It’s always common for people to load up on clothing and accessories throughout one season only to realize that the next season is right around the corner. In a perfect world, we would have an endless budget to buy a completely new wardrobe every season but in this day and age the best way to stay fabulous year-round is to know how to accumulate key pieces that are interchangeable throughout all seasons.
Here are my five key must haves to make the transition of summer to fall a little easier and a lot more fabulous…
1) Maxi Dresses/ Maxi Skirts

There’s something about a maxi dress or maxi skirt that gives you the immediate feeling of high fashion. Not only do they work for multiple body types and occasions but they are super comfy! We love our maxis in the summer for those beach vacations or Sunday brunches but why stop there? A maxi dress is great because it’s one piece ready to go and ideal for fall layering. Start by looking for a basic maxi dress, something in a neutral color so that you’ll get the most wear and versatility out of it. This ASOS Maxi Dress with Long Sleeves at only $42.58 is a must have! Perfect to wear all on its own or to layer with a denim jacket, leather vest, scarf, or even some bold jewelry. The possibilities are really endless.
Want more options? Get a basic maxi skirt instead so that you can mix and match different blouses for even more versatility. Try this Khaki Fold-Over Maxi Skirt by TOPSHOP for only $36.00 to get a similar look to Heidi Klum below. Pair with a cream button down or perhaps a regular fitted white tank and printed silk scarf, trade in your strappy sandals for some brown or gray booties and you’ll be ready for a fun girl’s date in the city or a quiet afternoon running errands and hanging out at your favorite coffee shop!
2) The Perfect Button Down with Character
Button downs have a bad rep for being a “boring basic.” When we typically think of a button down blouse we think of work clothes. However, in 2012 button downs have had a serious make-over coming in multiple prints, fabrics, with just the cutest and quirkiest little details. The once-boring basic can now be worn in multiple ways to make for not only a fun work wardrobe, but also a sophisticated part of an outfit for everyday casual wear. This Zara Shirt with Skull Buttons to the right for $59.00 is a great transition piece that can be dressed up or down for any occasion.
Its bright red hue and oxford style is a must have for this fall season. Not to mention the hip skull buttons which add that special detail to make life a little more fun.
Want some inspiration on how to wear this piece? Tuck it into a pair of high-waist trousers to match with some suede loafers and simple jewelry for a day in the office. Ready for a quick change to head to happy hour after the workday? Switch out your trousers for a pair of leather shorts, maybe trade in the loafers for some cute black booties and you’re set to go. When the weather gets a little cooler, throw on a leatherette or blazer and some sheer black tights for a super chic and easy fall outfit like Kim Kardashian’s below!
3) Comfy Tunics
It’s one of those days where you’re in a hurry, perhaps you’re having an off day and just need to be able to throw on something that’ll lift your spirits and make you feel cute all while still giving you the comfort you need. Tunics are the answer! Great in the summertime to throw on over a bathing suit, match up with a pair of cutoff shorts or wear with layers of beaded necklaces. What’s even greater is to find a versatile comfy tunic that can carry over into the fall season. This $79 Bebe Pointelle Dolman Tunic Sweater below is the perfect back up emergency piece that’ll get you through all of your “off days.”
While the weather is still warm you can match this piece up with a cute bandage skirt, long necklace and wedges for a lunch date. When the weather cools down some more, ditch the skirt for a pair of leather leggings, same wedges and maybe a cute fedora hat for an effortless look to go out. If you have a curvier shape and want to cinch in your waist, add a belt to flatter your mid-section and ditch the wedges for a sleek pair of peep toe pumps like Nicole Richie below.
4) Printed Trousers
When we think of putting together an outfit it’s pretty common to think plain pair of bottoms, cute top, accessories, and shoes. We put a lot of thought into what tops we want but tend to stay in a safe zone with our bottoms by choosing plain denim or solid colored trousers. This year, the roles have slowly turned and bottoms are becoming way more exciting than our tops! Printed trousers of all sorts are going to be a huge trend this fall and this summer we were given a preview with bright floral prints and fun geometric shapes. Although this might seem intimidating, it’s something everyone can pull off with the right pair that fits your style. These Snake Metallic Cigarette Trousers by TOPSHOP to the left at the price of $90.00 are a great addition for your transitioning wardrobe into fall.
I love these particular trousers because not only are they an animal print but they have a hint of metallic which will be amazing for fall 2012. The tan and gold coloring will be easy to pair with mustard yellows, deep reds and plum purples making for a rich and vibrant fall outfit. Not big into bold colors? Wear your printed pants with your perfect button down tucked in, throw on a sleek black blazer for cooler temperatures and get your booties back on for yet another easy out-the-door fall look! Check out Beyonce’s effortless style as she rocks her printed trousers during a day out with her beau.
5) Go-To Blazer
Last but certainly not least, the most important piece to have in your wardrobe for any and all seasons is the go-to blazer. Blazers have the ability to give a “wow-factor” to almost any outfit and that’s what I love about them. Whether you’re wearing a dress, suiting, or even just a pair of denim with a fresh white t-shirt, a blazer is the perfect final touch to making you look and feel super chic!
A big trend this year is having leather details on everything, especially outerwear and blazers. Of course, it’s practical to have that one really good black blazer, but why not get one with a little something extra? Leather detailing is perfect because you can still get something traditional but not be so boring by having that bit of edgy detail. This Bebe Shawl Collar Jacket for $149.00 is something you will wear continuously due to its simplicity and versatility as well as its flattering fit for all body-types.
This blazer is perfect for the end of summer when nights get a little chillier and you need something to throw on over your camisole and mini skirt. Equally useful in the fall to wear with your favorite pair of trousers, perhaps a knit top, favorite scarf, and some lace up oxford shoes.
