Friday, August 16

ABSOLUT Lunch Break

Break out from the normality of your 9-5 grind and come to a DANCE PARTY during your lunch break.
Flavorpill and ABSOLUT’s Lunch Break hosts a daytime party that’s happening every week all summer long featuring DJs by Philly’s own Questlove. RSVP for this week’s event featuring DJ PHSH. Your RSVP puts you on the e-mail list, which you’ll receive a message telling you where Lunch Break is happening, which could be at any venue in the city. From 1 – 2 p.m., dance your butt off on your lunch hour and then leave with a FREE bagged lunch. Attendees are also encouraged to donate to the non-profit organization Philabundance. Go ahead and let wild, but don’t forget to brush your hair and tuck in that shirt before you go back to office.

Annual Beer Event at Fonthill Castle
Where: Fonthill Castle at Mercer Museum, 525 E. Court Street, Doylestown, PA
Cost: $28 for members, $35 for non-members
Get fancy with an evening of local beer, wine and food on the stretch of the historic Fonthill Castle in Doylestown. Enjoy drinks from small-town Pennsylvanian companies such as Free Will Brewing Company, Stonekey Winery, and Neshaminy Creek Brewing Company, while noshing on a variety of salads, meats, cheeses, produce, and desserts. Park on the Parkway Presents Rocky IV

Where: Eakins Oval, 26th Street and the Benjamin Franklin Parkway

Come join The Oval, the new “Park on the Parkway,” with its final movie of the season of Rocky IV. Guests are welcome to come throughout the day for other free activities and programs, but the movie will begin at sundown. A variety of food trucks will also be in attendance. Can I get a “Yo Adrian!”

Saturday, August 17

The Free Library of Philadelphia’s Maker Celebration
Where: Parkway Central Library Lobby, 1901 Vine Street

Join in a celebration of Philadelphia’s makers as the Free Library of Philadelphia hosts a Maker Celebration at its Parkway Central branch. Throughout the summer, five Free Library locations have hosted Maker Education Initiative programming for children and teens, consisting of do-it-yourself classes that combine technology and art. This event will display their results along with 50 other Philadelphia-region artists, including Clay Studio and Girls Rock Philly. In addition, the celebration will unveil the Connection Message Project, a LED postcard and physical mural project created over the summer by the students of the Maker Education Initiative that express messages about Philadelphia.

20th Annual Festival of India
Where: Great Plaza at Penn’s Landing, 101 Columbus Boulevard
When: 1pm-7pm
Cost: Free
As part of the PECO Multicultural Series, the Festival of India commemorates the country’s Independence Day while encouraging all cultures to join in the celebration.  Attendees can enjoy delicious varieties of food, live music, unique art, special Bollywood performances, and more. Vendors will be selling traditional clothes, jewelry, crafts, and spices from different regions of the country.

Where: Kung Fu Necktie, 1250 N. Front St
When: 8pm-2am
Cost: $5
Come to this monthly simultaneous dance party and art show which takes place every 3rd Saturday at Kung Fu Necktie. From 8pm-11pm, enjoy an art exhibition by featured artist Nema Etebar on the 2nd floor and then head downstairs for a dance party spun by DJ PHSH. Must be 21+ to enter.

Sunday, August 18

27th Annual Caribbean Festival
Where: Great Plaza at Penn’s Landing, 101 Columbus Boulevard
When: 12pm-8pm
Cost: Free
Also part of PECO’s Multicultural Series At Penn’s Landing, attendees can experience the flavors and culture of the Caribbean along the Delaware River. Get down to the Philly PanStars, an authentic steel drum band, as well as other entertainment acts such as Image Band, Timi Tanzania, Sista Mafalda & the Kuumba Dancers, Limelite Band, True Voices, David Watki, and more. Even better, the celebration will raise money for college scholarships for students of Caribbean descent.

Joe’s and Jet: Cheesesteaks & Wine Dinner
Where: Joe’s Steaks + Soda Shop, 6030 Torresdale Avenue

Saturday, August 10

Southeast Asia Dragon Boat Festival
Where: Great Plaza at Penn’s Landing, Chestnut St and Columbus Blvd

As part of the PECO Multicultural Series, the Great Plaza will be flourishing with Southeast Asian Culture during the Southeast Asian Dragon Boat Festival.  Attendees can  sample delicious Southeast Asian cuisine and enjoy contemporary and traditional dancing and singing. Did I mention Dragon Boat races? Come cheer on corporate and community teams  as they compete for medals and bragging rights.

Port Richmond Second Saturdays
Where: Richmond St between Allegheny Ave and E. Clearfield St

Sponsored by Sweets & Treats, Port Richmond  will launch their series of  Second Saturdays starting this weekend. Come experience this “open house” street festival of street artists, food trucks, performers, local artisans, live music, classic cars, beer and more! Just a handful of vendors include The Tot Cart, Poi Dog Food Truck, Gigi & Big R Food Truck and Krakus Market.

Kenzinger Clambake

Are you really good at doing the limbo? Did you ever want to prove it? Then you should definitely come to Johnny Brenda’s and bend over backwards in a limbo competition to win Philadelphia Brewing Company Kenzinger prizes. You can also dance along to DJ DNA as he spins surf tunes and rockabilly soul while enjoying a clambake and samples of PBC’s delicious drafts.

ReAnimator Coffee Grand Opening

Support your local coffee scene and celebrate the grand opening of this small, locally owned and operated Fishtown micro-roaster.  The new shop will sell pour-over coffees, espresso-based drinks and food from Pure Fare, all which can be enjoyed in their indoor and outdoor seating. The party’s attendees can enjoy free samples of Yard’s Love Stout (made with ReAnimator espresso), a scoop of ReAnimator-laced red-eye vegan ice cream from the Little Baby’s, and coffee-braised pork and broccoli rabe pizza from Pizza Brain.

Jet Wine Bar Vineyard Trip

What better way to enjoy Sunday than with a day full of wine? Embark on this boozy journey to two Pennsylvania vineyards. You will first meet at 11 am at Jet Wine Bar for a pre-glass trip of sparkling wine and then be on your way to Kutztown-area vineyards.  You will first stop at Blair Vineyards to enjoy an assortment of wine followed by a picnic lunch packed by Jet Wine Bar. It’s also your lucky day because August 11 is Blair Vineyards Anniversary, and they want you to party with them! Happy August! Here’s our some of our top picks for what’s going on this weekend.

Friday, August 2

First Friday
Where: Old City

We all know about Philly’s First Friday, to which some locals might roll their eyes at, but if you haven’t explored your city on the first Friday of the month lately, you should reconsider. In addition to many art galleries opening their doors and pouring you some complimentary wine, there are several  great events going on and vendors lining their work along the street.

From 6pm to 8pm, Art in the Age is hosting LIVE LONG DAY by Geoffrey KixMiller and Zoe Axelrod. These two Philadelphians will present an “ongoing collaborative investigation of pattern, color, shape, and form in multiple dimensions” by combining sculpture, mark making and photography.  Art in the Age will also serve up some killer complimentary cocktails with their line of unique spirits. Located at 116 N 3rd St.

Starting at 5pm, the Philadelphia Theater Company will celebrate its First Friday with performances by fire dancers, belly-dancing collective Lux Arati and local DJ Big Jawn. Located at 480 S Broad St.

Also starting at 5pm, the Chemical Heritage Foundation will give out free samples of Pop’s Water Ice, Weckerly’s Ice Cream and Zsa’s Gourmet Ice Cream while educating visitors about how advancements in science have helped bring about different kinds of your frozen treats. Located at 315 Chestnut St.

From 7pm to 9pm, the Delaware River Waterfront Corp will hold Park After Dark, where visitors can enjoy regional artists’ performances presented by FringeArts. This week’s event features “Small Stake, an event that features a micro granting program, where contributors vote on the project/performance that seems most worthy of a $10-$20 donation, with five experimental performance art presentations in all. Located at Race St Pier.

Saturday, August 3

Mt. Airy Presbyterian Church’s Flea Market

Thrifters…commence! Get ready to dig your way through clothing, furniture, crafts, books, art and more while enjoying live music and baked goods. Need I say more?

2nd St Festival

Keep the summer going strong by attending the Fifth Annual 2nd St Festival and enjoy workshops, art, food trucks, beer gardens, and more than 150 vendors. This year’s fest will have four music and stage events, all programmed by the Folksong Society, with genres of hip-hop, folk, rock, reggae, DJs and more. Grab your friends and family and enjoy this awesome event while feeling good that you’re supporting the neighborhood.

Brooklyn Flea Philly’s Crème De La Crème Ice Cream Bonanza
Where: The Piazza at Schmidt’s, 1050 N. Hancock Street
When: 10 am-5 pm
Cost: $2 to $5
Brooklyn does Philly in this open-air market scene of shopping, food vendors, and live DJS. Since June, vendors from the Greater Philadelphia region have occupied the Piazza to sell antiques, collectibles, clothing, records, and more. In a special (and awesomely named) event, six different vendors will serve up scoops from local shops such as Bassett’s Ice Cream, Capogiro Gelato, and Little Baby’s Ice Cream. If you buy four ice creams and get four punches on an Ice Cream Bonanza punch card at each ice cream booth, you will earn a free Brooklyn Flea Philly Tote bag. Even better, you’re entered to win a special prize announced at the end of the market.
