30th Annual Ball on the Square 2014 Recap

Last Thursday the Friends of Rittenhouse gathered once again to host their 30th annual “Ball on the Square” in Rittenhouse Square.

Bringing to a close Philadelphia’s spring social scene, the Ball is without question the most elegant outdoor event in town. With proceeds going to maintaining the health and beauty of the square, more than 300 people dropped $550 per ticket to show their support.

While the main event was happening under the tented square, younger ‘friends of the square’ enjoyed cocktails, dancing and hors d’oeuvres across the way at the Rittenhouse Hotel. For a more moderately priced $150 a ticket, the “Young Friends Ball on The Square” attracted roughly 200 of Philadelphia’s up and coming socialites.

HGR Compound Classic Bronx, NYC: Recap

Wednesday March 5, 2014 – Bronx, NY

The Bronx, NYC was home for a Heineken Green Room two-part night of music and party with big-name DJ’s and music industry faces co-mingling with select HGR members. To begin the night,  The Compound opened the doors to its decorative and street dapper Bronx creative space “The Compound” for a meet and greet party, hosted by creative connector Set Free and DJ’d Ambush and Young Guru.

After this pre-party wrapped up, attendees joined a larger crowd of HGR members just down the street at the neighborhood hot-spot “Bruckner Bar & Grill” that featured the headlining set of DJ Enuff’s (NYC HOT 97 FM).

Beano at The Blockley!

The first time I heard Beano perform was at a show at The Blockley for Musiq Soulchild. We know how these shows can be: venue starts to fill with antsy patrons, there is no sign of the person we all came here to see, and we have to sit through opening act after opening act (songs we know and songs we don’t know).

However, when Beano took the stage squeals projected from the audience. Teenage girls were wiggling their way through the slightest gap in the crowd to get closer to the stage to see Beano.

He smiled, he laughed, and he was having fun.

He performed a cover of Bruno Mars’ “Locked Out of Heaven” with vocal chops that can undoubtedly compete with Grammy-nominated Mars. As he was performing, I glanced around the space and realized that everyone was having fun. The crowd didn’t mind waiting just a little bit longer for Musiq Soulchild if it meant that Beano can continue his infectious set.

Now, he will be headlining at The Blockley this Thursday, July 25th. Appropriately, the show is being put on by Dreams to Reality Music. So expect a fun night that will inspire you to pursue your dreams. It’s always pleasant to see Philly artist come full circle.

Flygirrl and gL Productions presents…Philly Loves GURU

Every time I hear sophisticated jazz and smooth wordplay I long for a time when rap groups like A Tribe Called Quest and De La Soul dominated radio airwaves. It’s a hip-hop that make my older cousins wish they could transport me back in time to East Coast circa 1990. You’ve heard it before: “the Golden Age” of hip-hop.

Well, next Thursday night at Johnny Brenda’s Flygirrl and gL Productions are going to recreate that atmosphere.  Continuing the “Philly Loves…” series, after the success of last February’s tribute to J Dilla, one of hip-hop’s most influential record producers DJ Pete Rock will be taking the stage to honor the late emcee, GURU.

One half of the hip-hop duo Gang Starr, GURU (Gifted Unlimited Rhymes Universal) has been repeatedly cited as one of the top MCs of all time. And although the 2011 Grammy Awards failed to recognize him in the annual tribute to musicians who had died that past year, there is no doubt that he has secured a place in music history.

Expect a night of throwback tunes, stunning art, and affordable drinks (plus, part of all the proceeds will be benefitting The American Cancer Society). And don’t forget to make space on your phone to document some some lasting memories.

I’ll see you there.

Girls’ Pint Out Meet-up

They’re gals into grolsch.
Ladies into lagers.
Princesses into pilsners.
Angels of ale.

Who are they?

They’re Girls’ Pint Out,  an all-female organization that seek to promote a refined level of beer appreciation among women and support the craft beer industry through monthly events, field trips and meet-ups. Founded in January of 2010, GPO is increasing in popularity with new chapters popping up across the nation, giving women the opportunity to socialize and learn more about craft beer.

Philadelphia’s Girls’ Pint Out chapter leader Kristen Gallo-Zdunowski was involved with the Boston chapter for about two years before moving to Philadelphia in July of 2012. “Girls’ Pint Out is a community to me,” explained Kristen, “I have gotten to know so many amazing women through this organization and we all have at least one thing in common – we love craft beer and want other women to love it too! Our events give women the chance to try new beer and talk about it in a social environment. The hope is that they’ll learn something new and expand their beer horizons.”

The next Philadelphia Girls’ Pint Out meet-up is Thursday, May 23, 2013 at Revolution House located at 200 Market St during happy hour from 5 to 7 pm. In this memorial weekend warm-up, goers can enjoy half off drafts, half off margherita pizzas and $5 red and white house wines. Make a new friend, discover a new brew, discuss the beer industry and have fun!
