Paolo Nutini Live @ Trocadero – Saturday 9/20

Paolo Nutini is performing live this Saturday 9/20 at The Trocadero Theatre. Get your tickets HERE.

Already a phenomenon worldwide, his new LP Caustic Love debuted at No. 1 in the UK earlier this year and has remained in the Top 10 for over 15 weeks.  It was first released in the U.S. on September 16 and Paolo is currently on his North American tour Sept 15 – Oct 7, including performances on Jimmy Kimmel Live and The TODAY show on Sept 17.  His music is raw and powerful and some say he reminds them of a male Amy Winehouse.

Beano at The Blockley!

The first time I heard Beano perform was at a show at The Blockley for Musiq Soulchild. We know how these shows can be: venue starts to fill with antsy patrons, there is no sign of the person we all came here to see, and we have to sit through opening act after opening act (songs we know and songs we don’t know).

However, when Beano took the stage squeals projected from the audience. Teenage girls were wiggling their way through the slightest gap in the crowd to get closer to the stage to see Beano.

He smiled, he laughed, and he was having fun.

He performed a cover of Bruno Mars’ “Locked Out of Heaven” with vocal chops that can undoubtedly compete with Grammy-nominated Mars. As he was performing, I glanced around the space and realized that everyone was having fun. The crowd didn’t mind waiting just a little bit longer for Musiq Soulchild if it meant that Beano can continue his infectious set.

Now, he will be headlining at The Blockley this Thursday, July 25th. Appropriately, the show is being put on by Dreams to Reality Music. So expect a fun night that will inspire you to pursue your dreams. It’s always pleasant to see Philly artist come full circle.

Flygirrl and gL Productions presents…Philly Loves GURU

Every time I hear sophisticated jazz and smooth wordplay I long for a time when rap groups like A Tribe Called Quest and De La Soul dominated radio airwaves. It’s a hip-hop that make my older cousins wish they could transport me back in time to East Coast circa 1990. You’ve heard it before: “the Golden Age” of hip-hop.

Well, next Thursday night at Johnny Brenda’s Flygirrl and gL Productions are going to recreate that atmosphere.  Continuing the “Philly Loves…” series, after the success of last February’s tribute to J Dilla, one of hip-hop’s most influential record producers DJ Pete Rock will be taking the stage to honor the late emcee, GURU.

One half of the hip-hop duo Gang Starr, GURU (Gifted Unlimited Rhymes Universal) has been repeatedly cited as one of the top MCs of all time. And although the 2011 Grammy Awards failed to recognize him in the annual tribute to musicians who had died that past year, there is no doubt that he has secured a place in music history.

Expect a night of throwback tunes, stunning art, and affordable drinks (plus, part of all the proceeds will be benefitting The American Cancer Society). And don’t forget to make space on your phone to document some some lasting memories.

Sound Select Celebrates the Fans That Care

rbss-10x-poster-national

Free shows are hard to come by, but Red Bull is introducing a new way for fans to engage with music artists. If you’ve been wondering why some of your concert-crazy friends saturate their Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter with #SoundSelect, it’s because Red Bull is rewarding “the fans that care”. By that, they are referring the people that go out and show support for their local music scene. Sound Select will be curating shows throughout the month of July that feature up-and-coming local artists opening for an A-list headliner.

Sound Select is coming to Philly and they are bringing Azelia Banks as the headliner, featuring local artists Mike Taylor and Khari Mateen for an exciting show at the Starlight Ballroom on July 26, 2013 at 10 pm.

So how do you get your free ticket?

Well, you have to request one at redbullsoundselect.com and sync your social network accounts with Sound Select. Then, just snap some shots of you out-and-about, enjoying Philly’s musical atmosphere and showing support for local venues and artists. Then, on July 12th, you will receive an e-mail that will grant you admission to the show. There are only 7 days left before tickets are sent out for the Philly show, so cue up your Instagram next time you head to a club with live music and get going! Philly always has a way of surprising the people that show love, so I’m sure this will be an event worth attending.

More info after the jump.
