Speakeasy: Writtenhouse
by Kim AndersonWrittenhouse is a band of brothers, artist and musicians. As a touring hip-hop band, Writtenhouse has built their name on their live performances, original material with a few covers from Radiohead, A Tribe Called Quest, Jane's Addiction, and De La Soul thrown in for good measure. What separates Writtenhouse from their contemporaries is that all the beats are played out live in real time. Audiences who have never heard the band's music are quickly won over as they get caught up in the energy and vibe of the performance. As an emerging act, Writtenhouse has received a lot of positive feedback not just about their music, but their movement as well. Their positive, upbeat message is the antithesis of the misogynistic and drug laden overtones that is so prevalent on urban radio.

What do you guys love about your job?
We’re in awe of creation, making blank space becoming anything. We love showcasing our talents. It’s meaningful. Artists don’t understand the kind of power we have as influencers. Let the music be the soundtrack to what you’re doing. It’s life and in life we convey the motion.
How are you all as creators?
Well, our best songs are made in twenty minutes and ten minutes. We can just feel the emotion through our beats. It’s very liberating. It’s a feeling, the point of complete freedom. Everybody wants to be free. This is what we created. Nothing better than being able to vent and convert your style, sound, and emotion into music and evoking emotion and awareness makes us want to become more knowledgeable as artists.

What’s so different about your music?
We’re trying to change the way people think with our music. We want to change people’s thought processes and make them believe in something bigger than themselves. We’re trying to give people the same experience we had making the music, listening, becoming emotionally evoked, and being involved. The whole point of our sound is to make a connection with people so they can relate. That’s how you develop fans and family.
How do you all feel about the state of music now?
We think it’s awesome. The things we grew up on are now cool again. Genres of music are blending together. We believe heavy commercialism is out. Jay Electronica is on the radio now getting played three times in a row! We’ve been saying that for a while now, hip-hop is coming back, the intelligence within it. People hated on Hammer and Vanilla Ice but we would never hate on anyone for making money-selling records. There’s definitely a lot more supply now. People want something new quickly because last projects are forgotten. But we’re a home-cooked meal.
What’s up in Philly?
There’s a lot of undiscovered talent in Philadelphia. A lot more talent here than what’s recognized. Our friend, Luke Ross, is an amazing DJ. He’s constantly educating himself on music history. He’s working hard not getting recognition. We can learn from him. There’s just a lot of talent around us. We’re due for a city explosion. We’ll have a breakthrough artist and the rest of us will follow. We’ll be part of a movement that takes it to the next level. There’s so much camaraderie in Philadelphia. Working with big Philly artists like The Roots is also amazing and learning from them is such a blessing.
