Play By Ear: The Shout Out Out Out Out

by Brittney Barrett

If the world were an apartment complex and Canada were our noisy upstairs neighbors, we’d probably spend all night wrestling with our pillow to tune out the rich textural stomp of native electro/dance outfit Shout Out Out Out Out. Or we’d pull off our pajama pants and join the party. Since it’s not quite that easy, the groups own Nik Kozub was nice enough to save us the trouble of crossing border patrol and share a playlist of jams typically privy only to a Canadian with a PhD is getting the party started.

1. Spacemen 3 - Big City (everybody I know can be found here)
This is off of Spacemen 3's album 'Recurring', which was recorded at a point when J. Spaceman and Sonic Boom were already not seeing eye to eye anymore. I am a huge Spacemen 3 fan, and this remains one of my favorite songs of theirs. I really like like long songs and pulsing repetition, and this does the job nicely. I could (and often do) play this song on repeat all day.

2. The Emperor Machine -  The TV Extra Band
The Emperor Machine is probably my favorite electronic music producer. His synth sounds are analog perfection, and he manages to take strong influences from prog and Krautrock, and update them for the modern dancefloor. Spacey and awesome. This is on the fantastic DC Recordings label.

3. White Light Circus - Interrupted Time
White Light Circus is Dean from Chicken Lip's solo project. Once again, old technology and wonderful analog synth sounds are put into modern relevance. Also on DC recordings

4. Chicken Lips - Sweet Cow (Chicken Lips Zeefungk Mix)
Chicken Lips were a duo made up of the previous two artists on this list. Can you tell I'm a fan? This jam has a fantastic bass line, some really great and weird synth sounds, and enough inventive breakdowns and production tricks to keep me interested throughout.

5. Still Going - Still Going Theme
This is one of my most played records on the DFA label. It is so simple, yet so catchy. It exists in a nice middle ground in terms of tempo and feel when I'm DJing, where I find I can play it early in the night, use it to transition into something bigger, or use it to bring a set back down.

6. Mogg and Naudascher - Moon Unit Pt. 2
Amazing and mesmerizing track from this Berlin duo, on the Supersoul Recordings label. It's dark without being heavy, and builds up from simple pulsing synths (which is tremendously appealing to me) to being a real burner. I love this track.

7. Style Of Eye - Rockett
This is from a single on the Tiny Sticks label. I'm a fan of most of his stuff, but this is my fave track that Style Of Eye has done so far. A little less tech-y than many of his productions, and a bit more on the electro side.

8. Williams - Picadilly Circuits
To me this is a perfect marriage of tech-house and space disco. I really don't know much about Williams, but I've liked everything I've heard, and I play a few of his records out regularly. This was released on Get Physical.

9. Neu! - Isi
Krautrock perfection. This is another one that I could listen to on repeat all day. Plodding 8th note kick drum, piano, and blurbly synth leads. Yesssss.

10. The Oscillation - Head Hang Low
A beautiful Shoegazey rendition of a Julian Cope song off of The Oscillations debut album on DC Recordings. The whole album is great, go buy it!
